On Friday, March 20th, nineteen individuals learned they would be joining residency programs affiliated with the Yale Department of Psychiatry.
Sixteen trainees will join the adult psychiatry residency as first-year residents (including two in the Neuroscience Research Training Program); two will join the Solnit Integrated Residency in Child and Adult Psychiatry, a joint venture with the Yale Child Study Center; and one will join the adult psychiatry residency as a second-year resident.
These new trainees represent a broad diversity of backgrounds and interests. Eleven of the nineteen trainees are women and nearly half are members of racial or ethnic populations that are underrepresented in medicine. Five of these new trainees will join the residency with MD/PhDs and three others hold masters-level degrees in arts or public health.
The number of U.S. medical students matching into psychiatry grew by 13 percent this year. Continuing a long-standing trend, Yale School of Medicine matched a significantly higher percentage of its graduates into psychiatry residencies than the national average—more than 10 percent of Yale’s graduating medical students will go on to join a psychiatry residency, more than double the 4.6 percent of graduating U.S. medical students who will specialize in the field.
