Division of Human Genetics

Joel Gelernter, MD
Professor of Psychiatry, Genetics, and Neurobiology
Director, Division of Human Genetics

Human genetics is a rapidly moving research field that is providing us with novel insights into the mechanisms of human health and disease. The Division of Human Genetics was formed in March 2004 to provide a center of focus for psychiatric genetics research, and study of other complex genetic traits related to behavior, at Yale. Researchers in this division study genetics of a wide range of traits in psychiatry, with a major concentration on substance dependence research – genetics of alcohol, opioid, cocaine, and tobacco dependence, and related traits. Other projects involve anxiety, affective disorder, and schizophrenia genetics.

Division researchers also have extensive collaborations with other Yale researchers in the study of pharmacogenetics, neuroimaging, genetic anthropology, and numerous additional phenotypes associated with psychiatric illness. Special populations are often helpful in genetics research, and division researchers therefore have collaborations in Thailand, Russia, Israel, and China.

Interested students, fellows or faculty are welcome to contact Dr. Gelernter or any Division faculty for additional information.
