Funding Will Further Study of Bipolar Disorder in Adolescence

04/10/2012: The International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF) will fund a project exploring the development of bipolar disorder in adolescence led by Hilary Blumberg, MD, associate professor of psychiatry, in the Child Study Center and of diagnostic radiology. Blumberg is the director of the Mood Disorders Research Program at Yale.
Esperanza Diaz Recognized as Outstanding Mentor of Psychiatric Trainees

04/09/2012: Esperanza Diaz, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at Yale, will receive the inaugural Area 1 American Psychiatric Association Member-in-Training Mentor Award. Dr. Diaz is medical director of the Connecticut Mental Health Center's Hispanic Clinic and the Connecticut Latino Behavioral Health System, and is an associate program director of the Yale School of Medicine's Psychiatry Residency Program.
Genetic Mutations at Conception Linked to Many Cases of Autism

04/02/2012: The Psychology Section of the Yale Department of Psychiatry is pleased to announce the twenty-one new Fellows who will join its psychology pre-doctoral internship program in July. The group, who will become the Section's Class of 2013, was determined by a national Match process and announced on Friday, February 24th. This year, a record 359 individuals submitted applications to train at Yale.
Delphin-Rittmon Appointed Senior Advisor in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

03/26/2012: Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, has accepted a political appointment in the Administration of President Barack Obama as Senior Advisor to the Administrator in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Office of Policy, Planning, and Innovation. SAMHSA is an Agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Yale Contingent Confronts Mental Illness Stigma in Nigeria

01/04/2012: Recent surveys indicate that nine of ten persons with mental disorders in Nigeria do not receive services. Despite a population of roughly 150 million, the country has few trained psychiatrists—roughly one psychiatrist for every million residents. In November 2011, Robert Rosenheck, MD, professor of psychiatry and of public health, and addiction psychiatry fellows Theddeus Iheanacho, MD and Carla Marienfeld, MD visited Nigeria to get a firsthand look at the challenges facing mental health care in this West African nation.
ACT Team: In the Community

12/21/2011: The Connecticut Mental Health Center's Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team provides services to people wherever they are. Staff estimate that as many as 85% of ACT clients have a "dual diagnosis" of substance abuse and mental illness. These clients have typically not responded well to traditional outpatient treatment.
Study Suggests Effective Treatment for Vets with Dual Diagnosis of PTSD and Alcohol Dependence

12/15/2011: Despite the relatively common diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and comorbid Alcohol Dependence (AD) among veterans, very little research into effective clinical therapies in these populations has been undertaken. Recent Yale-led research published in Neuropsychopharmacology suggests that a norepinephrine uptake inhibitor is as effective as current FDA-approved treatments for PTSD while achieving superior alcohol use outcomes.

Compound Shows Promise as Treatment for Symptoms of Schizophrenia

12/12/2011: Yale researchers have published promising data supporting further exploration into a novel treatment for the symptoms of schizophrenia. The study, by authors affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry, the West Haven campus of the Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System, and the Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit of the Connecticut Mental Health Center, was released online in late November ahead of publication in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology.
Steve Martino, PhD, Appointed Chief of Psychology at VA Connecticut Healthcare System

12/02/2011: Following a nationwide search, Steve Martino, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, has been appointed the Chief of Psychology for the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. The VA's Psychology Service includes 49 psychologists, two well-respected predoctoral training programs, clinical and research postdoctoral training programs, and opportunities for research, education and national service.
Residents Screen Films to Start Conversations about Psychiatry

12/01/2011: Cinema and Psychiatry, a resident-led group within Yale's Department of Psychiatry, seeks to enrich resident education through the experience of interpreting, discussing, and enjoying films. Films have ranged from comedic to tragic, and discussions have encompassed psychosis, suicide, child development, substance use, transference and psychotherapy, history of psychiatry, gender dynamics, and the narrative form.
3rd Annual Psychopharmacology Master Class to be Held in January 2012

11/30/2011: On Friday, January 13, 2012, the Yale Department of Psychiatry will host its 3rd Annual Psychopharmacology Master Class. The latest advances in the treatment of psychosis, depression, impulse control disorders, pervasive developmental disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and smoking cessation will be presented by clinicians and researchers who specialize in these medical challenges.
Department Mourns Loss of Brain-stimulation Research Pioneer

11/28/2011: Jose M.R. Delgado, MD, PhDwas a groundbreaking pioneer in brain-stimulation research whose work paved the way for the development of deep brain stimulation treatments for psychiatric disorders including depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Dr. Delgado served as Director of Neuropsychiatry and Professor of Physiology at the Yale School of Medicine. He passed away on September 5th, 2011 at the age of 96.
