Public psychiatry research division established

June 09, 2015

The Division of Public Psychiatry, a new research division within the Yale Department of Psychiatry, has been established to serve as a home for investigators and practitioners committed to conducting innovative research in the field of public psychiatry.

Under the leadership of Michael J. Sernyak, MD, the division will foster collaborations both within the department and across the university, with the goal of improving outcomes for people with mental health and addictions problems who are served by publicly funded agencies.

"Public psychiatry is an area in which the department has made substantial contributions throughout the decades—with nearly a half century of extremely close collaborations with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Yale-New Haven Hospital," said John H. Krystal, MD, chair of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. "This division will allow the department to further deepen these collaborations, and it will serve as a departmental home for all faculty who are interested in public psychiatry."

"All of us in the field care deeply about the people most affected by our work—those with mental health and addictions problems receiving services from public agencies," said Dr. Sernyak. "I look forward to bringing together an outstanding group of researchers, practitioners, scholars from different disciplines, and people with lived experience so that we can continue to delve into the important questions and ultimately find new ways to improve people’s lives."
