Yarnell to represent Yale Science Diplomats at DC Career Trek

February 19, 2018

Stephanie Yarnell, MD, PhD, a Fellow in the Yale Department of Psychiatry’s Law and Psychiatry Fellowship, has been selected to serve as a Yale Science Diplomat at the 2018 DC Career Trek.

Yale Science Diplomats educate the public about science issues and encourage scientists to become engaged in the political process. The group promotes a program called Science in the News, an annual series of fun, educational lectures given in the Spring semester by graduate students and post-docs to the New Haven community.

Some members also participate in the annual DC Career Trek, which this year will be March 19 and 20. The two-day program helps graduate students and post-docs at Yale learn about science policy and communications jobs in Washington, DC. Members visit Yale alumni and other PhD scientists in and around the federal government to learn what they do and how they got to their current position.

This year’s program will include meetings at the Department of Energy, House Science Committee, State Department, National Academy of Science, and Union of Concerned Scientists. The group will host a happy hour on March 19 with science policy and communications professionals, including Yale alumni.

Yarnell graduated from the Yale Department of Psychiatry Residency Program in 2017. During residency she was a member of the neuroscience research track where she concentrated on addictions-related research.

She was honored with multiple awards, including the APA Research Colloquium for Junior Investigators Award and the Yale Department of Psychiatry’s Thomas P. Detre Award. She served as a chief resident with clinical placement on the Emergency Psychiatry service at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven
