Katz appointed Senior Deputy Editor of residents' journal

May 02, 2016

The Yale Department of Psychiatry has enjoyed a strong presence on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Psychiatry Residents’ Journal, and the publication’s new Senior Deputy Editor will continue that tradition.

Rachel Katz, MD, a PGY-3 has been named to the Editorial Board of the online journal, which is published monthly with The American Journal of Psychiatry. The journal’s current Editor-in-Chief is Rajiv Radhakrishnan, MBBS, MD, a PGY-4 at Yale, and other Yale trainees have held administrative roles and written for the publication.

“It’s an exciting way to step out of the department a little bit,” Katz said. “This allows residents and fellows to be published. It gives them the opportunity to have a publication of their own.”

The journal was introduced in 2006 as a forum for trainees – including medical students, residents, and fellows – to share ideas and experiences in training, clinical practice, research, and careers with colleagues. The publication contains no work by attending physicians; the content is generated by trainees.

“We find that the quality of the writing is very good,” Katz said.

This allows residents and fellows to be published. It gives them the opportunity to have a publication of their own.

The journal’s editorial board, under Radhakrishnan’s direction, last year surveyed its readers to learn the type of educational content people would like to read. Most readers said they wanted more articles on psychopharmacology, clinical treatment, neuroscience, and DSM-5.

The board responded by creating and expanding forums where those topics are discussed. Authors may also create podcasts of their work and have it appear on the journal’s Facebook page.

Last year, Katz worked as Guest Section Editor of a special Addiction issue, and she expects the Editorial Board will publish more theme issues in the next academic year.

Katz completed her undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, and her medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
